DEAR GOORIN BROTHERS HAT COMPANY, The time we spent together will not be forgotten. You were my first. I came to you wide-eyed, and you hired me with open arms. Yes, the relationship was one sided at times; I eagerly gave you all I had to give, and you gave me a measly intern wage in return. But I persisted, and we worked through it. You gave me an official title and the keys to your building. I felt loved. Things were going so well, it seemed. Alas, you were also my first in other ways. YOU WERE THE FIRST TO CREATIVELY FUCK ME UP THE ASS. Usually it hurts a little until you get used to it, but this is just plain VIOLATION. You used me to help design your whole women's Fall 09 line. I styled your spring catalog for a ridiculously paltry amount. I gave you inspiration and personal samples to knock off "for the team". You called me into your office to tell me "Things are going well! You fit in with our team! We want you to help design our G line! go make cool hats!" Fast forward THREE WEEKS, and I have been given a bullshit excuse and laid off with no prior notice. zero, zilch. Not even a week to find a new job. You are very bad with goodbyes, Goorin Brothers. Not only that, but you ASKED ME if I knew anyone that could replace me (without letting me know the purpose) the day before you decided to fire me. SO, GOORIN BROTHERS, THANK YOU FOR THE CREATIVE SODOMY. Just because I'm an entry-level designer doesn't mean I deserve to be taken advantage of in the manner that I have. I hope my designs FAIL and cost you money (they won't; they're rad, and you know it). If you find a steaming pile of shit on your doorstep with a little tiny hat on top, that's a gift from me. Take it as one last design inspiration. |

Some pictures of a collection I have in the works, entitled "among ghosts". Of course, I had to shoot at the notoriously haunted Queen Anne Hotel. The original conception came from my propensity for all things "not there", be it with men, the past, ephemera. Also, the feeling of being a ghost amongst a crowd. I have these themes that reoccur in every type of creative endeavor. Lots of light-reflecting fabrics and translucence. silk organza, cotton sateen, chiffon. hoods. things made to cover. All photos by me. If you ever visit SF, consider staying at the queen anne. It used to be a girl's boarding house- architecturally exquisite, and the staff is amazingly friendly.

fear and loathing
jumbled, scared attempt at newness. driving to las vegas on tuesday with someone i've only known for a week. to hell with it; i've wanted a road trip for so long. i feel utterly lost, so getting more lost only seems fitting. a long-lost acquaintance posted this recently. it is surprisingly poignant: i think that when you find that "right" person they could be right for you in one or more of many different roles. when the person is right, you just know they are right ... and if it is important to you, you have to do anything in your power to find out what role they will fit with you, and make sure you appreciate them for what they are to you. you can never make someone more than they are willing to be. don't ever let that person get away from you, there's no excuse for letting go of love.

suddenly everything wants to live...
I found the most amazing poem book today in a bin of old photographs. It is called The Rabbit Box, and is apparently part of a 4 piece set printed in 1968 by Joseph Pintauro. Each book represents a season, and The Rabbit Box is befittingly Spring. The pictures and text have a beautiful and disturbing quality to them- no doubt about the author's love affair, heartbreak, and subsequent "rebirth" as told through springtime imagery. It is first edition, though I doubt the books ever did a second run. I paid $2 for this thing! I've decided to post a group of pages every day, that way I don't have to sit in front of the scanner for hours. enjoy... |

I've been working on this stupid CFDA moodboard for the better part of my day. I can't decide if it's "ok" or just plain horrible. If you go to school to be a fashion designer, you are required to 1.) be a genius graphic design artist, 2.) be a genius illustrator, 3.) be able to actually construct said illustrated clothes. I have until monday morning to fully design and illustrate 10-15 croquis with flats and fabric board, plus essay on my concept, which will be a cinch. and finish up that radio project, also due monday. no sleep for kaylin. ever. ![]() in a nutshell, blood and guts printed on gathered silk chiffon that unzips and spills out. the idea is to make you feel pretty uncomfortable. pretty and uncomfortable.

i've been very inspired by Francis bacon paintings lately. he had an amazing eye for color and a knack for making people feel uneasy, even if they didn't know quite what they were looking at. ![]() ![]() |

what I REALLY do with my time
sew, sew, drape, cut, sew, cry, bleed, shake my fist at the gods above, sew, pass out. Here are the photos from last Friday. I was asked to do a fashion show for Stiletto, a monthly costume party here in SF. The theme was "Mob Scene", so the clothing was mobster/body bag appropriate. All clothing hand-made, except for my collared shirt... ![]() I would dress like this every day if I had the guts. |

form does not follow function.
i hate the term "good design". "Good design" distinguishes itself by being inherently multi-faceted; it simultaneously expresses a coherent aesthetic and functional purpose. In good design, aesthetics, functionality, and ingenuity must intertwine and work together as a single thread. Without this harmony, the design fails to be effective. yay or nay? |

"I thought the most beautiful thing in the world must be shadow, the million noving shapes and cul-de-sacs of shadow. There was shadow in the bureau drawers and closets and suitcases, and shadow under houses and trees and stones, and shadow at the back of people's eyes and smiles, and shadow, miles and miles of it, on the night side of the earth." I'd forgotten how much I love this book.
